Disability Driving Lessons

Welcome to our website, where we provide specialized disability driving lessons for those who have physical or cognitive impairments. Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and empowering learning experience for people with disabilities who want to learn to drive.

At our driving school, we understand that driving can be challenging for people with disabilities, but we believe that everyone has the right to learn to drive and experience the freedom and independence that driving can provide. That's why we offer disability driving lessons that are tailored to meet the needs of each individual student, taking into account their unique abilities, challenges, and goals.

Our disability driving lessons are taught by experienced and qualified driving instructors who have expertise in working with people with disabilities. Our instructors are patient, understanding, and professional, and they have the knowledge and skills to adapt their teaching methods to meet the needs of each student.

We offer a range of disability driving lessons, including hand control lessons, adapted vehicle lessons, and cognitive assessment lessons. Our hand control lessons are designed for people with physical disabilities that affect their ability to use their feet to operate the pedals. Our adapted vehicle lessons are for people who need to use modified vehicles, such as those with wheelchair access or other adaptations. Our cognitive assessment lessons are for people who have cognitive impairments, such as learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorders.

Our disability driving lessons are tailored to the needs of each individual student, and we use a range of teaching methods to ensure that every student learns in a way that suits them best. Our instructors use visual aids, verbal instructions, and hands-on teaching techniques to help students understand and learn the necessary driving skills.

We also offer a supportive and encouraging learning environment, where students can feel comfortable and confident while they learn to drive. Our instructors provide constructive feedback and guidance, helping students to identify areas that need improvement and work on them effectively.

Our disability driving lessons are also highly flexible, and we can tailor them to meet the specific needs and schedule of each student. We offer a range of packages, including one-off lessons, refresher courses, and longer courses. Our instructors are available to teach you at a time and place that is convenient for you, allowing you to fit your lessons around your work or personal commitments.

We also support the specialist driving instructors who will be teaching these people to drive for the first time and helping others to return to or continue driving after accident or illness.

Who can give me advice?

You need a licence to start driving and to hold a licence you must comply with the medical standards of fitness to drive. If you think you have a medical condition that could affect your fitness to drive seek advice from your GP or optician or visit the DVLA website: www.gov.uk/driving-medical-conditions

If you need further advice before applying for your first provisional driving licence contact your nearest Driving Mobility driving assessment centre, go to www.drivingmobility.org.uk or ring 0800 559 3636. If you need confirmation of your potential to hold a licence a pre-driving assessment could be carried out before applying; you would need to have received your licence before doing the in-car driving assessment – unless the assessment centre has off road facilities.

Returning to driving

Many people return to driving after accident or illness without any difficulty but, especially after more serious illness, it is vital that you discuss this with your doctor first.

Your doctor will be able to confirm whether an immediate return to driving is going to be possible or whether you must stop driving for a period of time. The doctor will also be able to advise whether notification to DVLA is required.

If there is any question about your practical driving ability you or your doctor could contact your local “Driving Mobility” assessment centre to discuss the booking of a practical driving assessment; this would check your medical fitness to drive and look at your in-car driving ability. Following the assessment you would have a de-brief with the assessors and recommendations would be made for the future.

What will I be able to drive?

Many people with physical disability, with special educational needs and those with hearing difficulties are driving cars every day of the year, it may be possible to drive a standard manual car but may be necessary, or easier, to drive an automatic. Sometimes adapted or modified controls are required and for some people with more severe disability the adaptations may need to be more complex.
